2005 Wheat Quality Council
Hard Spring Wheat & Durum Tour Completed

Summary by Ben Handcock

The Wheat Quality Council Tour was conducted on July 25-28 in North Dakota plus parts of South Dakota and Minnesota. (Tour Map)  There were 36 participants this year.

The 277 spring wheat fields surveyed averaged 35.5 bushels per acre.  The 27 durum fields averaged 29.6 bushels per acre.  The spring wheat potential is 3.3 bushels below last year and about one-half bushel below the tour 5-year average.  The durum potential is almost identical to last year and about 2 bushels per acre above the tour 5-year average.

The average for all fields surveyed was 34.9 bushels per acre compared to the tour 5-year average of 34.6 bushels. (Tour Results)

Day one covered the southern half of North Dakota plus the northern tier of counties in South Dakota.  Projected yields ranged from 17.4 to 65.7 bushels per acre.

Day two covered the northwest and north central parts of North Dakota with projected yields of 9.9 to 74.9 bushels per acre.

Day three covered the northeast and north central parts of North Dakota plus the western tier of counties in Minnesota.  Yields ranged from 13.3 to 62.9 bushels per acre.

I believe the quality of this crop is still very much “up in the air.”  We saw scab levels ranging from minimal to very severe on most of the routes in most of the state.  Moisture received this year was more than adequate to produce a great crop.  The problem was that some of it simply came at the worst possible time.

Producers indicated that when the time to apply fungicide was imminent, it kept raining and they were not able to get into the fields to make their applications.  Many went ahead and applied the fungicide when they could get in, but in some cases it appeared to have been too late.

I also think another factor is influencing the level of scab this year.  There seemed to be fewer acres planted to resistant varieties (mainly Alsen).  Producers got by without much scab for the past couple of years and appeared to have switched to slightly higher yielding varieties without much or any scab resistance.  This may trigger a resurgence of Alsen in 2006.

I don’t think anybody can predict what will happen when the combines hit the fields.  A lot of the scabby kernels will be light weight and go out the back of the combine.  It would seem inevitable that some portion of the scabby kernels will get into the grain tank and cause potential problems with the quality of this crop.  We may also see some areas with reduced test weight levels.

This will all come to light over the next month or so as the crop is harvested.  We can only hope for the best.  At the very least, the scab will cause some yield loss for the producers.

Our results should not be viewed as official.  The North Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service will release their official crop estimate on August 12.
